In late December 2023, the Wisconsin Supreme Court invalidated the state legislative maps it had approved in 2022. The court's composition changed from a majority of conservative judges to a 4-3 liberal majority and a new lawsuit was filed claiming that many of the districts in the maps approved by the court were not contiguous - in violation of the state constitution. The court gave a January 12 deadline for parties to the litigation to submit maps, and 7 were submitted on the deadline. The U.S. Census Bureau yesterday released a set of summary file tables in response to data users’ requests for another way to download data in bulk from the 2020 Census Detailed Demographic and Housing Characteristics File A (Detailed DHC-A) that was released on September 21, 2023. The Detailed DHC-A Summary File provides the most comprehensive detail on race, ethnicity and tribes among all 2020 Census data products. It contains data on population size and, for groups that meet specified population thresholds, sex-by-age counts for detailed race and ethnicity groups and American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and villages. Georgia Redistricting Update (Jan. 10, 2024)

On October 26, 2023, a U.S. District Court ordered Georgia's legislative and congressional districts to be redrawn before the 2024 election. The legislature had passed those maps in 2021 following the 2020 census. The litigation includes three sets of plaintiffs and the court ultimately found that the legislature's maps violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Among other findings, the court noted convincing evidence that the political process in Georgia was not equally accessible to Black voters when compared to their White counterparts.
