In late 2027, the Census Bureau plans to formally announce the launch of Phase 2 of the Voting District Project (VTDP) through a Federal Register notice. The VTDP gives official state liaisons the opportunity to submit and verify their voting districts (a broad term covering precincts, election districts, wards, and other areas that administer elections) for inclusion in the 2030 Census Redistricting Data products under P.L. 94-171, which include both tabulated data and geographic products. Starting in early 2028, the Bureau plans to begin the initial voting district update cycle, providing participating states with guidelines and training for submitting their voting district boundaries. After processing the submitted updates, the Bureau will offer states two verification cycles to confirm their updates were processed correctly: the first is planned for early 2029, and the second for early 2030, though the second cycle will only be available to states that participated in either the initial update cycle or the first verification cycle.
