Reform: 2021 Gerrymandering Threat Index by Nonprofit Group “RepresentUs”

RepresentUs, a nonprofit advocacy group, released an online app and 160-page Gerrymandering Threat Index report which measures each state's risk level for gerrymandering activity during the 2020 redistricting cycle. By its measure, 35 states have an extreme or high threat of gerrymandering or 70% of the nation, including over 188 million Americans. The index measures a state's likelihood that it will enact "gerrymandered" maps based on several factors including whether politicians draw maps, how transparent the process is, the robustness of legal criteria, the likelihood of partisan line-drawing, and how difficult maps are to challenge in court. Second Court Rewords Missouri Redistricting Ballot Amendment Language

A county circuit court judge ruled earlier last month that the wording of a ballot measure authored by the Republican legislature was “misleading” in an effort to “entice” voters into repealing an anti-gerrymandering reform measure approved by voters in 2018. This week a Missouri Appeals Court affirmed the lower court ruling that the original ballot language was misleading but it reworded the circuit court’s rewrite as well. Michigan Launches Anti-Gerrymandering Campaign on Four Fronts

Michigan - The Voters Not Politicians Ballot Committee is looking to end partisan gerrymandering in the state for good. The group, including Wayne State University political science professor Kevin Deegan-Krause, will be heading up a good government initiative to end gerrymandering using (1) a ballot initiative; (2) legislation introduced in the state legislature; (3) a lawsuit claiming partisan gerrymandering that is patterned after the pending Wisconsin lawsuit; and (4) a partnership with the Democratic party's newly formed initiative to counter ongoing Republican electoral dominance via redistricting.
